A Guide to Osteopathy & Manual Therapy

How much do you know about our Osteopathy & Manual Therapy service here at Balance 360?

As part of our extensive offering, Osteopathy & Manual Therapy is one of our most popular services here. But, not everyone knows about what exactly it is we cover. Now, with new practitioners joining us and changes to the service, we’re excited to share more about what it entails.

Whilst you can learn more about our services directly through our website, today we’re going to be covering some more of the frequently asked questions, and providing a deeper dive into the service.

If you need to book in for some autumn/winter maintenance, now’s the time to learn more and be proactive with your physical health!

What is Osteopathy & Manual Therapy?

The techniques we use are a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and manipulating a person's muscles and joints.

As such, Manual Therapy is also a subset of Osteopathy, in which we use hands-on techniques to help manipulate and mobilise muscles and tissues. Whether it is generalised aches and pains, arthritic pain, joint pains, muscle spasms or even digestion problems, there are a wide variety of conditions that our team can treat.

What conditions can be treated?

We are musculoskeletal (MSK) experts that can treat a variety of conditions that affect the muscles, bones and joints.

Between the General Osteopathic Council, and the Committee of Advertising Practice, they have provided an exhaustive list of conditions that we can treat:

  • “Generalised aches and pains

  • Joint pains [including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis as an adjunct to core OA treatments and exercise]

  • Arthritic pain

  • General, acute & chronic backache, back pain (not arising from injury or accident)

  • Uncomplicated mechanical neck pain (as opposed to neck pain following injury i.e. whiplash)

  • Headache arising from the neck (cervicogenic) / migraine prevention

  • Frozen shoulder/ shoulder and elbow pain/ tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) [arising from associated musculoskeletal conditions of the back and neck, but not isolated occurrences]

  • Circulatory problems, cramp

  • Digestion problems

  • Joint pains

  • Lumbago

  • Sciatica

  • Muscle spasms

  • Neuralgia

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Inability to relax

  • Rheumatic pain

  • Minor sports injuries and tensions”

However, if you have a specific condition it’s always best to get in touch first, as we may be able to refer you to a GP if we are unable to treat you ourselves.

What is the difference compared to massage therapy/services?

The main difference is a difference in goals. Massage therapies tend to promote physical and mental relaxation, as well as treating minor injuries and muscle tensions.

Osteopathy & Manual Therapy provide a more in-depth service, treating the bones and muscles at a deeper level. A general rule of thumb is to visit an Osteopath if the ache or pain doesn’t go away on its own or after massage services.

All of our practitioners at Balance 360, no matter their field, will be able to point you in the right direction and the right service for you, if they are unable to treat you.

Recent changes at Balance 360

We’ve had a few new changes to our Osteopathy & Manual Therapy service recently, so it’s a perfect opportunity to share more today!

In our last Osteopathy updates blog we were excited to announce that Rhys Kinrade has completed his Bachelor’s degree in Osteopathy. Since then, he has officially registered as an Osteopath and is continuing to take regular appointments in his new field.

Next, Charlie Parris completed her Master’s Degree in Osteopathy in 2014, which was inspired by her own journey of recovery following a personal injury. This experience sparked her passion for helping others regain their health, and she has gone from strength to strength ever since in the team.

Our newest member of the team is Kat Martin - a qualified Osteopath from the European School of Osteopathy. Fun fact, her passion for the industry was inspired by her family, a lot of whom are also healthcare professionals practising alternative approaches!

And finally, we’ve spoken about all our new Osteopaths and Manual Therapists, but we can’t leave out our clinic owner, Jolene. After all, Osteopathy was the very first service Jolene offered when she opened the clinic - we’ve all come a long way since then!

Our entire Osteopathy & Manual Therapy team are ready to ‘crack on’ and help you get Back in Balance - make your appointment today.
